Ongoing sound change in Dublin English
This presentation will
provide a detailed account of recent research on variation and change in
Dublin English phonology. It investigates the structure of Dublin
English, drawing on Dubliners' folk linguistic
perceptions, a socioeconomic and historical study of the city and
acoustic analysis of the speech of a cross section of the community.
This analysis reveals a chain shift in progress among most subjects, but
not residents of the inner city. This result is contrasted
with popular perceptions of Dublin English and the social significance
of this variation is discussed.
