The I news online are currently running a series of articles on regional variation in English dialects. Their most recent report focuses on the Cornish dialect and features recent research by our current PhD student Rhys Sandow.
Rhys’ research shows that the strength of Cornish identity can be traced by people’s choice of words. For example, using crib, which in Cornwall means ‘lunch’, is associated with those who have a strong sense of belonging in Cornwall.
By analysing speech of more than 80 speakers, Rhys discovered that there are many types of Cornish identities. The I news online traces how such a complex situation developed.
